Australian Timbers

Timber Grades

laminate flooring
A Grade (Select)

A Grade (Select)

Typically, A grade or Select grade has few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size. There will also be a minimal amount of Sapwood defects and filler, if any at all. Where filler is used its colour is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and the colour of the filler may vary from batch to batch. There will be a relatively small amount of colour variation in the timber itself.

B Grade (Standard & Better)

B Grade (Standard & Better)

B Grade will have a mix of A grade or Select grade boards with planks that have more knots. Slightly larger knots are allowed in this grade. Heartwood and colour variation in the timber should be expected and may consist of some checks (cracks across the growth rings), Sapwood and filler. The colour of the filler selected to complement the Australian timbers wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.

C Grade (Standard)

C Grade (Standard)

C Grade Standard will have slightly larger knots and features than B Grade. This grade includes both Sapwood and Heartwood and has a wider range of colour variations in the timber should be expected. It may consist. The colour the filler is carefully selected to complement the Australian timbers wood rather than match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.

Sapwood

Sapwood

Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It tends to be lighter in colour than the Heartwood. Certain fuming, smoking and colouring processes emphasise it since it doesn't react to these treatments to the same degree. By definition, Sapwood contains more moisture, however, this is no cause for concern since all Clever Choice timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.

Knots and Fillers

Knots and Fillers

A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colours: white, grey, brown and black are shown here.

Medullar Rays, checks & shakes

Medullar Rays, checks & shakes

These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.

Standard & Better Grade

Standard & Better Grade

Standard and Better Grade is a blend of Select and Standard Grade boards.

What to Expect from Clever Choice Australian Timbers Flooring Grades:

Australian timber flooring is sourced from managed forests throughout Australia. We use the finest machining techniques to utilise the majority of the tree to avoid wastage. We show what is likely to be the ‘worst case’ in terms of knot size and many individual planks will fall well within this. But please remember that, since they are usually selected by eye, there is always scope for an occasional board to fall outside of these parameters. Part of the beauty of wood is that each and every plank is unique, so our criteria is merely a guide, given in good faith and to the best of our knowledge.

About the Test Reports and Disclaimer

Clever Choice Underlays have been tested by Koikas Acoustics Pty Ltd. The purpose of undertaking these impact noise tests was to quantify the acoustic performance of the flooring systems with selected floor coverings in conjunction with the sub-base being
concrete with suspending ceiling. The acoustic ratings provided in this report are indicative and for comparative purposes only.

Tests were conducted in a residential apartment building located in Macquarie Park, NSW. We were advised that the ceiling/floor system between the residential units is constructed with the following materials:

  • Approximately 200mm thick concrete slab
  • 80-100mm suspended ceiling cavity, and
  • 13mm thick plasterboard ceiling

Test results were compared to the acoustic requirements of Part F5 of BCA (Building Codes of Australia), the standards prescribed by the Association of Australian Acoustical Consultants (AAAC) and City of Sydney Council’s DCP 2012 requirements. All measurements were carried out following the guidelines and procedures outlined in AS/NZS ISO 140.7:2006 “Field measurements of impact sound insulation of floors” with the rating determined as per AS ISO 717.2-2004 “Rating of sound insulation in buildings and of building
elements”.

Selecting the right Underlay for your purpose is of great importance, it is just as relevant to understand how sound and vibrations travel. Underlay is not the sole determining factor for achieving ultimate acoustic ratings and reduction in transmission of noise.
Acoustic ratings will vary depending on the testing environment/conditions including, materials/structures of the existing ceiling/floor system, room volume, internal layout and workmanship. Even with the same testing environment, acoustic ratings can vary from room to room and so buildings to buildings as no two buildings are identical.
